Carroll County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Why do snakes bite?
Almost every human being is afraid of sustaining a snake bite because these bites are often linked to severe health complications or fatality due to the venom injected at the bite point. In reality, many snake species have a dry bite, meaning that the fangs do not inject any venom into the body when they bite. On the other hand, venomous species exist, and once they bite, the venom can cause life-long health challenges or even death in the absence of prompt medical care. Contrary to what most people think, snakes do not randomly bite human beings, pets, or other animals. They bite only when they are triggered as a defense mechanism or when they need to feed. If they are in a safe place where nothing is a bother, they can be very calm reptiles, so what exactly causes a snake to bite?

For food
Snakes are predators that will strike other animals for food. Smaller snakes that feed on small animals like insects, small fish, and frogs do not need to bite their prey before swallowing it. Large snakes, however, require larger meal portions, so they tend to prey on bigger animals, and sometimes, even humans. To make it easier to swallow large-sized prey, some snake species bite their prey and inject venom that paralyzes it. This makes it much easier to swallow the prey as it is not able to resist once paralyzed.

Provocation
Any event that makes a snake feel threatened pushes it to become hostile. Activities that provoke snakes include trying to catch or kill it, and they retaliate by biting the animal or person who provokes it. For this reason, humans are discouraged from unnecessarily startling a snake in its natural habitat. People should also not attempt to catch a snake without the appropriate tools and equipment as they get aggressive and attack faster than most humans can anticipate. If a snake feels threatened, it will strike you immediately.

Sensing fear
Snakes can sense fear, and they often interpret this as a threatening scenario. When they feel threatened, they tend to bite. This means that you should try your best not to panic if you encounter a snake unexpectedly. Instead of panicking, you should stand still or move very slowly to give it room to escape without hurting you. You can also change direction, and it will revert into a hiding place. Do not bother the snake because these reptiles do not attack unless you give them a reason to.

NOTE: To reduce the chances of a snake-bite, it is recommended that you walk on cleared paths so that you do not step on a snake accidentally. It is also crucial to walk in closed shoes and wear long pants if you intend to walk in places with overgrown grass. If you get bitten by a snake, you should seek immediate medical attention to prevent health complications or death. You should take note of the kind of snake that bit you and describe it to the doctor or medic attending to you so that they can administer the correct anti-venom or other management strategies.
